Cook and Effy are in self-imposed exile from the gang; they've gone to stay with Cook's father. Effy is running away from everything she's ever known. Unfortunately, Cook is slowly falling out of lust, and in love. Back in Bristol, JJ tries to snap Freddie out of his depressed stupour; he's down about the loss of both his best mate and the girl he loves. Cook's father wastes no time trying to profit from his son's arrival, and involves him in the village steeplechase, placing a wager that could clear his pub debts, or lose him everything. Cook is vulnerable in his desire to please his father, and accepts the bet, regardless of the potential consequences. Effy calls for Freddie and JJ, and JJ decides that they must take action. When they arrive, Cook demands an explanation, and decides they'll deal with who gets Effy by winning the race. Cook elbows Freddie halfway through and he drops out. However, JJ beats both Cook and the previous champion. JJ then forces Cook, Freddie and Effy to deal with the truth as to who Effy loves. Cook decides to leave and tries drinking himself to death. Freddie and Effy spend the night together intimately. He finds his father about to leave the village and he tells Cook that he always secretly didn't care for him. He nearly kills Cook in an attempt to get his boat, and Freddie saves him. They start dealing with their problems. JJ and Effy show up, and they escape the village on Cook's father's boat. Cook sees his father's reaction, shouting "I'm Cook!" Cook realizes he doesn't want to end up like him, kicking him out of the boat. The group are then left wondering as Freddie says "So, What do we do now?".
